AWLA Nigeria Chapter secured a conviction and life imprisonment sentence in State V Seydou Garuba ID/ 14972C/2021 for defilement of an 8-year-old Prosecutrix under section 137 Criminal Law of Lagos State and his name to be registered on the sexual offences register. Judgement given by Hon. Justice R.A Oshodi of the sexual offences Court, Ikeja on 11/2/2024
In his sentencing His lordship stated:

“Seydou Garuba, you have been convicted of defiling an 8-year-old child. This is one of the most serious offences in our criminal law, this is why the legislators-imposed life imprisonment. You have abused your position as a neighbourhood storekeeper to lures child to sexually abuse her and threatened her to keep her mouth shut. Your action has not only affected her physically but psychologically and affect her psyche in future relationships. Rather than accept responsibility for your action chose to cast aspersion on the victim’s family over an alleged debt of N3,900 which continued during sentencing, claiming he made his statement made at the Gender unit under duress and shifting the blame on the police.

Section 137 CL prescribed life imprisonment. This severe punishment reflects condemnation of sexual abuse on children. He shall be imprisoned for life and under the relevant provisions of the law be registered on the sexual offences register.
