The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Nigeria, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic stampede incidents that occurred at a Christmas Funfair in Ibadan, and food give-aways in Anambra and Abuja that resulted in the death of innocent children and adults, calling for enhanced public safety policies and accountability.
AWLA has condemned the incidents and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedies.
According to reports, the stampede occurred during a program aimed at providing support to underprivileged children in Ibadan and two separate food gifting events in Abuja and Anambra. The event, which was organized by a not-for-profit groups, were intended to bring smiles to the faces of the children and adults, but it ended in disaster.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of innocent lives in this tragic incident,” said the AWLA Nigeria Country Representative, Falilat Oluwatoyin Orire. “Our hearts go out to the families of the children and adults who lost their lives, and we pray that God grants them the strength and comfort to bear this irreparable loss.”
AWLA Nigeria has also called on the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
“We believe that those responsible for organizing these events must be held accountable We call on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this incidents and to take necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from happening again.”
The incidents have sent shockwaves across the country, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their condolences and outrage.
AWLA Nigeria has promised to work with the relevant authorities to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
