The Association of Women Lawyers of Africa (AWLA) Nigeria has joined the global campaign to end violence against women and girls, marking the beginning of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls.

The 16-day campaign, which runs from November 25th to December 10th, aims to raise awareness about the alarming escalation of violence against women and girls and to mobilize action to prevent and respond to this crisis.

According to the United Nations, one in three women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner. In Nigeria, the National Demographic and Health Survey (2018) reported that 31% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence.

AWLA Nigeria has revitalised its commitment to supporting efforts to eliminate violence against women and girls. The organization believes that every woman and girl has the right to live free from violence and fear.

As part of its efforts to mark the campaign, AWLA is calling on governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to unite and take action to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.

The organization is also urging Nigerians to join the campaign by using the hashtag #16daysActivism and by sharing their own stories and experiences of violence against women and girls.

AWLA’s participation in the campaign is part of its ongoing efforts to promote and protect the rights of women and girls in Nigeria and across Africa.
